Halfway down an unremarkable side street in South Kensington lies Da Spago. The restaurant has enjoyed a recent  facelift creating a light and pleasant dining environment.  As a starter I chose the beef carpaccio with rocket, parmesan shavings, shredded apple and truffle oil (£7.90) which was fresh, tasty and absolutely  delicious. I’ve never come across the addition of apple before and the sweet tang worked extremely well. I followed with an old favourite, spaghetti and clams (£8.50) which was garlicky and savoury although a few more clams wouldn’t have gone amiss.

With their own wood fire oven, pizza is a speciality of the restaurant and they offer a wide range of combinations as  well as a number of pizza bianche – without tomatoes for those like my son who has an aversion to any tomato whose provenance is other than a ketchup bottle! However, what stands out as a real feature of the  place are the metre long pizzas (from £27.60,  equivalent of four pizzas) which stretch the length of the table – a real show stopper and multi meal solution if you have a bunch of hungry kids to feed. And there is no need to worry about arguments over the topping, as they will decorate each quarter to suit the individual. If the gasps of delight from the other diners were anything to go by I’d recommend it for the spectacle alone!

All televised sports will only be shown downstairs in the basement seating area of the restaurant and not on the ground floor of the restaurant.
